Assemblies of God Nigeria is a foundational pillar of the Pentecostal movement in Africa. Established in 1934, the church grew out of the indigenous “Nigerian Church of Jesus Christ” following a strategic partnership with the Assemblies of God USA. Over the last nine decades, it has expanded into a global force with approximately 16,300 churches and a membership exceeding 3.6 million. Under the current leadership of Rev. Dr. Abel Amadi, who was elected as General Superintendent in late 2022, the church has maintained a steadfast commitment to “Classical Pentecostalism”—balancing fire-brand spiritual fervor with a highly structured, institutional approach to social welfare and national development.
Headquartered in Enugu, the church operates through a “General Council” structure that ensures its social impact reaches the most remote regions of Nigeria. Its philosophy centers on the “Total Man,” a belief that the gospel must address not only the spiritual state of a person but also their physical, intellectual, and economic well-being. This vision is executed through a massive network of orphanages, schools, hospitals, and vocational centers that have operated continuously for nearly a century.
SOCIAL MISSIONS & HUMANITARIAN IMPACT
HEALTHCARE: 90+ YEARS OF RURAL CLINICAL CARE
Assemblies of God Nigeria maintains an extensive network of rural healthcare centers, designed to serve communities where government infrastructure is often absent.
- The “Evangel” Health Initiative: The church operates several “Evangel” hospitals and clinics, most notably in the South-East and North-Central regions. These facilities provide affordable maternal care, general surgery, and immunization programs.
- Medical Missions (2025-2026): Throughout 2025, the General Council coordinated nationwide free medical outreaches, focusing on malaria prevention and hypertension screening in rural districts.

EDUCATION: EVANGEL UNIVERSITY AND THE “TOTAL MAN”
The church’s investment in education is headlined by Evangel University, Akaeze (Ebonyi State), which began operations in 2012.
- Academic Excellence: Evangel University is recognized for its high-performance College of Health Sciences and College of Management Sciences. In 2026, the university held a combined convocation where Rev. Dr. Abel Amadi was installed as Chancellor, reinforcing the church’s commitment to producing graduates who are “role models in both the private and public sectors.”
- Affordable Quality: MTU and Evangel University are noted for being among the most affordable private Christian universities in Nigeria, intentionally keeping tuition low to ensure accessibility for indigent students.

- Orphanage Network: The church operates several homes for the motherless and abandoned children, providing not just shelter but full-cycle education and vocational skills.
- Widows’ Empowerment: Through the Women’s Ministries (W.M.), thousands of widows annually receive training in tailoring, soap making, and small-scale agriculture to foster economic independence.
